How to choose a moving company?

As you're searching for a local moving company, check their reviews online ( Yelp or Google). Choose a company with a plethora of positive reviews and read them to learn about previous customers' experiences. Once you have a mover in mind, check with the Bureau of Household Goods and Services of California to see if they are accredited, licensed and insured.

What is the cheapest moving company?

When it comes to opting for cheap movers in San Diego, it’s always enticing to save a few bucks. However, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. In every city across the country, there are numerous fly-by-night movers with just a truck and a small crew. While a discount moving company can offer an extremely low moving quote, this kind of cheap mover can put your valuables at risk. Inexperienced, undermanned, and underprepared movers simply don’t have the expertise and resources to perform a move efficiently and to properly protect your valuables. Moreover, many of these cheap movers are not affiliated with the Bureau of Household Goods and Services of California and may not comply with any moving standards. When choosing a mover, it is important to keep in mind that you are allowing strangers into your home. So why not skip the uncertainty involved with a cheap mover and choose moving professionals that offer expert services at a reasonable price and have a proven track record of customer satisfaction with verifiable references to back it up?

How much does it cost to store furniture with a moving company?

Storage in transit is a convenient way to store your items during a move, especially if you can’t move into you home yet. The average cost of storing furniture when moving is 40 cents per cubic foot for thirty days. You can also use a portable storage solution. With portable storage, the moving company leaves a portable container outside your home, which you then fill up. Once you are ready, the moving company picks up the unit. Then the unit is either taken to the new home to be unloaded or placed into storage until later.

This really depends on the time of the year. We are busiest on weekends, during the summer, and at the end and beginning of each month. If you are moving during that time, we suggest contacting us as soon as possible and ideally with at least two weeks’ advance notice. If you are moving during the week or during our slower season, we typically have more availability but we still recommend letting us know as soon as possible. How should I pack my belongings if I am packing the items myself?

Here are a few guidelines for self packing of your belongings are:

  • keep same/similar items in a same box;
  • keep items from certain dresser/furniture piece in the same box;
  • use small boxes for books and CDs;
  • use medium-sized boxes for fragile items and electronics;
  • use large boxes for linens and clothes from dressers;
  • once packed box weights should not be over 50lb. If you are able to lift a box yourself, that box is good to go!

Do I need to empty out my filing cabinets, dresser or refrigerator when I move?

Most dressers and cabinets weren’t designed to be moved with the extra weight of clothes and other items, so for the safety and structural integrity of the item please remove all items from any drawers.

Additionally, it is very important that any small misc. items are removed beforehand such as glasses, jewelry, etc. Furniture items will often need to be tilted on their side or even turned over in order to be moved safely and these small items can get lost within the dresser or fall out of the dresser.

Protection & Insurance

What to do when a moving company steals your stuff?

If you’re concerned about a packing or delivery crew stealing items, you can contact your moving company and file a complaint about the missing item to open an investigation. You can also call the police to file an official report, contact the FMCSA or local regulating authority and notify the Better Business Bureau. Hire a lawyer and sue the moving company for breaching their contract, if possible.

Does The Rock Movers move appliances?

Our movers are all professionals, but not certified technicians. We DO NOT take any liability when disconnecting the appliances are involved with water or gas connections. We can still do it, but you will have to be present at the end to inspect for liability reasons.

Will you shrink wrap my upholstered furniture?

We will protect upholstered furniture with plastic, before applying moving blankets.

Can I transport jewelry and important documents together with my other items?

No, you can not ship your jewelry or important documents. We will not move these items for you, and will not be held liable if you pack these items in boxes without our prior knowledge. We advise you to separately pack and keep your documents and jewelry and store them securely while your home is open during your move, and to transport these items with you to the next location.

How do I file a damage claim?

We do everything in our power to make sure your items get from A to B in the same condition it left in. If for some reason, that doesn’t happen and it was our fault, we will make sure to make it right by fixing or replacing the item(s). Often times, the movers will notice a damage as it happens and point it out to you. They will then process a damage claim, offering a settlement immediately if it makes sense, or letting the back office know the details so they can follow up.

If you notice, at any time, that something during the move was damaged and wasn’t noticed, we ask that you let us know immediately. The best way is to shoot us over some quick pics of the damage (multiple angles can sometimes help) along with as much info about the damaged item as possible (price, model number, manufacturer, etc.) so we can start figuring out the best course of action to get it fixed.

Remember that our promise to repair or replace damaged items does not expire. If at any time in the future you notice something was damaged during your move please let us know about it!

Do you offer insurance for all of my items?

By default as required by Department of Transportation, your belongings will be covered with free BASIC coverage of $0.60 cents per pound per article (item). However, you ARE able to additionally insure your items, by going through a 3rd party insurance company, and choosing the level of liability & deductible levels. We recommend choosing insurance.com.
